On January 21, the Western Property Owners’ Association held its Resident Electors’ Meeting at the Garden City Library. The WPOA Nominating Committee Chairman presented Bob Bolebruch as the WPOA’s candidate for the position of Village Trustee for the two-year term starting in April 2020. This will be Trustee Bolerbuch’s fifth term. The WPOA would like to congratulate and thank him for his commitment to serve our Village.

The January meeting also included special guest speaker, Superintendent of Public Works Joe DiFrancisco. Mr. DiFrancisco was first appointed Secretary to the Board of Trustees in 2016. In March 2017 he was appointed Superintendent of Public Works, taking on responsibility for all Street Maintenance, Sanitation & Recycling, the Water & Sewer Departments, the Central Garage, Facilities and the Engineering Department. He is also a member of the Village’s Environmental Advisory Board, 3rd Track Committee, Traffic Commission, Safety Committee, Deferred Compensation Committee and Dental Committee.

Superintendent of Public Works Joe DiFransico

Superintendent DiFrancisco narrated a PowerPoint presentation outlining the actions he, under the direction of the Mayor and Board of Trustees, is taking to deal with the emerging contaminants present in our water supply. One contaminant of major concern, 1,4 dioxane, is the priority and the presentation showed the steps the Village is taking to institute the proper filtration systems to help eliminate it from the water supply. Mr. DiFrancisco stressed that even though the current levels of 1,4 dioxane are below the Federal Standards, the Board still intends on taking the necessary steps to bring those levels to zero. He also answered questions from the residents about many of the other functions of our Public Works Department.

Western residents also heard reports from President RoseAnn Vernice and the WPOA Village and School Board Trustees.

Additionally, the WPOA reminded residents that the Long Island Rail Road will close New Hyde Park Road to all traffic for approximately seven (7) months beginning February 3rd for construction of the new underpass. Detours will be posted. For updates, please visit www.gcwpoa.com or the Village website at www.gardencityny.net.
